Would You Move for Your Business?

I remember reading a blog post not long ago from one of my favorite business bloggers, Erica Douglass. It was called, “Dear California: I’m Leaving You. Here’s Why…” In it, she explained that—even though she was a California girl through and through—she was moving her business to Austin, Texas because of California’s notoriously business-unfriendly government.

I was reminded of this when I stumbled upon a recent LATimes article that said California had ranked 48th on a list of business-friendly states (only ahead of New York, 49th place, and New Jersey, 50th). The study, commissioned by the conservative think tank, Tax Foundation, is being hotly debated and has been labeled by some as “partisan.”

The article states:

“According to the foundation, the top 10 states with business-friendly taxes were Wyoming at No. 1, followed by South Dakota, Nevada, Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, Washington, Montana, Texas and Utah. Many of them made it to the top tier because they don’t collect a major tax, such as on corporate income.”

So, this got me thinking: Would YOU be willing to move for the sake of your business? How big would your business have to be to make it worthwhile to you? And, for all you California folks: Do you think the business environment out there is as bad as the reputation seems to indicate?
